Tearing down an office building from the ground up and sustaining it on earthquake-proof hydraulic pillars to eliminate the vibrations from the trains running right under it; opening up an entire space at street level; stripping away the inside to reveal the bones of the original structure and redesigning what used to be offices into rooms which offer refuge from the bustle outside; and giving the façade a way to engage in a dialogue with the city…
“We chose ceramic for the façade, a material that has close ties to the city’s history and architecture. We also wanted to give this material an added value: music. With the help of Ceràmica Cumella and the IAAC, we invented an algorithm so that, based on sound, a robot would engrave the ceramic during the extrusion process. In this way, we created an infinite number of unique pieces yet they all follow the same pattern”.
